About Inchagoill
Inchagoill, a wooded island of about 33 hectares in the north-west of the lake, lies halfway between Oughterard and Cong; its Irish name is usually explained as the island of the devout foreigner. Its early church site is a National Monument in State ownership. A flagged path links its two churches: Teampall Phádraig, traditionally connected with St Patrick but probably built in the 6th or 7th century, and Teampall na Naoimh, a Hiberno-Romanesque church with a carved 12th-century doorway. The island also has the Lugnaedon stone, a pillar inscribed 'Lia Lugnaedon Macc Limenueh' and often called the oldest Latin-alphabet inscription in Ireland. Corrib Cruises' summer island cruises from Cong land visitors for a guided tour, and their Oughterard–Cong sailings call here too. A Mass is said on the island once a year. We have no information on berthing for private boats, so ask locally before you land.
