About Cornamona
Corr na Móna, Cornamona in English, is an Irish-speaking village on the north side of Lough Corrib, in the middle of the Joyce Country mountains and lakes. It is a small working village with a pier, a shop, a pub, a playground and a community centre, and Fáilte Ireland lists Cornamona among the upper lake's public quays and slipways. Beyond it the western arm runs on to Maam at the foot of the Maumturk Mountains, passing Hen's Castle on its little island. This is remote, rock-strewn water far from any help, so keep to the marks, watch the weather and plan to be back alongside in good time.
Things to do
- Fishing
Brown trout and salmon angling
Lough Corrib is wild brown trout and salmon water: the salmon season opens on 1 February, trout on 15 February, and both close on 30 September. Fáilte Ireland suggests a local guide for a first visit, because of the lake's size and its underwater hazards.
