About Maynooth
Maynooth is on the canal because the Duke of Leinster paid towards the works and insisted that his town be served. The result is Duke's Harbour, a roughly triangular basin on the north side of the canal opposite the railway station, with a big playground, paid parking and a Waterways Ireland slipway; it is popular with anglers and is the official starting point of the Royal Canal Greenway. The historic Mullen Bridge, with lime-mortar joints more than 200 years old, crosses the canal in the town. On the way from Leixlip, old boatmen believed the 13th lock at Deey Bridge was haunted. Ashore, Maynooth Castle, seat of the FitzGerald earls of Kildare, has an exhibition in its keep, the town has plenty of places to eat, and the Glenroyal Hotel and Carton House can both be reached from the canal.
