About Killaloe & Ballina

Killaloe in Co. Clare and Ballina in Co. Tipperary face each other across the Shannon where Lough Derg narrows back into a river. Their 13-arch stone bridge has carried only walkers and cyclists since October 2025. Public moorings line both banks: on the Killaloe side a jetty above the bridge, the old quays below it and a short canal where you will need mooring pins; on the Ballina side a floating jetty upstream of the bridge. Killaloe's Waterways Ireland service block has toilets, showers, pump-out and shore power, while Ballina has toilets, showers and a slipway. North of the bridge are several private marinas, among them the large Lough Derg Marina on the Ballina shore. St Flannan's Cathedral, from about 1200, is open daily, Brian Ború ruled Ireland from Kincora on the hill above the town, and pubs, restaurants and supermarkets are a few minutes' walk from every berth.
