Forum rules

These rules apply to everything you share with your Jetty Hop member account: forum discussions, replies and photos, travel stories, community reports and Jetty Talk. They are short on purpose, and they are what our moderators work by.

Who can join

  • You need to be 16 or over.
  • One account per person. Your public name is your first name and the first letter of your last name; please use your real first name.
  • Businesses are welcome: hire companies, marinas, boatyards, pubs and shops on the water. Say who you are when you write about your own business, and answer questions rather than advertise.

Be a good neighbour on the water

  • Be friendly and patient, especially with people on their first trip. Disagree with the idea, not the person.
  • No harassment, bullying, threats or personal attacks. No hate speech against people for who they are, for example their nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality or disability.
  • No sexual or gory content. Nothing that sexualises or endangers children, ever.
  • Do not post other people’s private details (addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, number plates). No photos in which other people can be recognised unless they agree, and never photos of children.

Keep it true and useful

  • Share what you saw and when you saw it. Mark a guess as a guess.
  • Safety first: no advice that puts people in danger. Jetty Hop is a travel guide, not a navigation aid: always check official charts and Waterways Ireland marine notices. In an emergency, call 112 or use VHF channel 16.
  • Honest reviews and complaints about businesses, Waterways Ireland or anyone else are welcome when they come from your own experience. No fake reviews, and do not state as a fact what you cannot stand behind.
  • Post in the category that fits; the Harbour bar is for everything else.

Selling and advertising

  • Selling your own boat, engine or gear: put the listing on buz.ie and share the link here.
  • No spam, scams, chain posts, affiliate links or advertising that has nothing to do with the waterways. Paid or sponsored content must say so clearly.

Your posts and photos

  • You keep the rights to what you post. You allow Jetty Hop to store it, show it on the site, in feeds and in notifications, and to resize or crop photos for display, for as long as it is up.
  • Only post what you have the right to share: your own photos and words, or short quotes with their source.
  • You can edit or delete your posts. A first post that others have answered stays as an empty marker, so the discussion still makes sense.
  • Nothing illegal under Irish or EU law, for example copyright infringement, selling illegal goods, or content that incites violence or terrorism.

How moderation works

  • An automated first check. New discussions, replies and edits are first read by an automated review service against these rules. Only clear problems wait for a moderator: spam, scams, unrelated advertising, threats, harassment, hate speech, sexual content involving minors and someone’s private details. You then see your post as “Waiting for admin approval”, with a one-line reason. The automated check never deletes a post or suspends an account by itself. When it is unavailable, posts appear at once and moderators look at them later.
  • People decide. Jetty Hop staff and the moderators we appoint review reports and held posts. They can approve or reject a held post, hide or restore posts and discussions, lock, move, split or pin discussions, remove a profile or boat photo, and suspend an account. Every action needs a reason and is recorded.
  • Proportionate. We choose the lightest step that solves the problem, look at the context and respect freedom of expression. Criticism alone is never a reason to remove a post.

Reporting a post

  • Members: choose Report on a post or a discussion and pick a reason. Moderators look at every report. When they decide, we tell you in the forum’s notifications (the bell) whether the content was hidden or stays up, with a link explaining how to ask us to look again.
  • Anyone, with or without an account, can also contact us via hello@jettyhop.ie. Please send the link to the content, why you believe it is illegal or breaks these rules, your name and email address, and a statement that your report is accurate and complete to the best of your knowledge. You need not give your name when you report child sexual abuse material.
  • When you report by email, we confirm that we received it, decide carefully and without undue delay, and tell you what we decided.

When we act on your content

We tell you what we did (for example rejected, hid or suspended), which rule or law it was based on, whether automated means were involved, and how to ask us to look again. Moderators’ private notes are not shown.

Asking us to look again

If you disagree with a decision about your content or your account, or about a report you made, contact us via hello@jettyhop.ie within six months, with the link and why you think we got it wrong. Where possible someone who did not make the first decision looks at it again, and we reply without undue delay. You can also contact Coimisiún na Meán, Ireland’s Digital Services Coordinator, or go to court.

Suspensions

We suspend accounts that post illegal content, scam or threaten people, or keep breaking these rules after a warning. We may also stop people who keep sending reports that are clearly unfounded. We warn first when that is reasonable, and we tell you how long a suspension lasts.

Threats to life or safety

If something posted suggests a threat to someone’s life or safety, we inform An Garda Síochána.

Contact

Our point of contact for members, other users and authorities: hello@jettyhop.ie. You can write to us in English, German, French or Dutch.

Changes

We update these rules when the forum changes and announce important changes on the forum. Last updated: 4 November 2026.
