Notice: Raised by Iarnród Éireann only on a few pre-arranged dates in the season: at least two weeks' notice to the Waterways Ireland Eastern Regional Office (+353 1 868 0148); a lift goes ahead only if two or more boats are booked. The IWAI reported the bridge out of order pending repairs, with no lift dates for 2025, and Special Marine Notice 1/2026 refers to ongoing works at the bridge: confirm with the Eastern Regional Office first.

About Newcomen Lift Bridge

The railway lifting bridge beside Newcomen Bridge on North Strand Road carries the line to Connolly over the canal, just below the 1st lock. It belongs to Iarnród Éireann and can only be raised during a rail possession, so boats pass on a handful of dates in the season that Waterways Ireland arranges in advance. Book at least two weeks ahead with the Eastern Regional Office and expect a lift to be cancelled unless two or more boats are waiting; on the day, Waterways Ireland staff set the order under the bridge and through Lock 1. The bridge has failed repeatedly: the IWAI's Royal Canal branch reported it out of order pending repairs, and the 2026 notice to all waterway users refers to ongoing works, so check before planning a crossing.
