About University of Limerick & the Living Bridge

The University of Limerick’s main campus spreads along the old Shannon at Plassey. Its landmark is the Living Bridge, a 350 m footbridge opened in 2007 that links the campus in Co. Limerick with its buildings on the Clare side. It was built as the longest pedestrian bridge in the country and won a RIBA European Award in 2008. Walk out to the middle for a wide view of the river, which here carries only the small flow left after the Ardnacrusha headrace takes the rest. That makes it a training water for rowers and paddlers rather than cruisers: the university boathouse is home to UL’s rowing, kayak and sub-aqua clubs and holds an indoor powered rowing tank. The campus is a pleasant walk from the city along the river and the old canal paths.
