About Boyle
Boyle Harbour lies at the end of a short canal cut off the Boyle River, just upstream of Lough Key, with room for about 25 boats, parking and a Waterways Ireland service block with toilets, showers and a pump-out, but no shore power. Footpaths lead from the harbour into town and, in the other direction, through the woods to Lough Key Forest Park. Boyle grew up around its abbey, founded in the 12th century by monks from Mellifont under the MacDermots and still one of the best-preserved Cistercian churches in Ireland; the OPW opens it in the summer season. King House, the early Georgian mansion of the King family, is now a museum and arts centre, open from Easter to Halloween, and its courtyard holds an artisan market every Saturday morning. The town has pubs, cafés, shops and a railway station for crew changes.
