About Ballinasloe
Ballinasloe grew up around a ford and a castle on the River Suck and is now one of County Galway’s biggest towns, 16 km and one lock up from the Shannon. On the way, the Suck's two fixed bridges leave 4.30 m and 4.57 m at ordinary summer level (air-draft gauge at Pollboy Lock). Its marina, run by Waterways Ireland, is in the middle of town next to a flood weir of 1885, and the service block has toilets, showers, a laundry and shore power, but no pump-out. Supermarkets, pubs, restaurants, hotels, a cinema and public transport are a short walk away, which makes the town the best place on this stretch to restock. Each October the Ballinasloe Fair, dating back to 1722 and one of Europe’s great horse fairs, fills the Fair Green and the streets. The Hymany Way and riverside walks are close by, and the Suck is known for coarse fishing.
