About Castle Saunderson

In 2019 Waterways Ireland completed phase one of restoring the Ulster Canal: the River Finn was dredged up from Quivvy Lough, a new navigable bridge and a short cut of about 300 m were built at Derrykerrib, and a landing jetty went in at Castle Saunderson, adding 2.5 km of navigation to the Upper Lough. The jetty serves the demesne of the Saunderson family, whose Gothic-revival castle now stands in ruins. In 1689 soldiers of James II retreating from Newtownbutler were ambushed here, and many drowned in the Finn. Scouting Ireland owns the estate and runs an international scout centre, opened in 2012, which takes non-scouts for most of the year. The next phase, to a new marina at Gortnacarrow beyond Wattlebridge, is due to start building in 2026; until then this is a dead end, and the restored kilometre at Clones is not yet linked.
